The best VPN for streaming is ExpressVPN, with an exceptional rating of 9.9/10. The VPN delivered Full HD and 4K streaming speeds across all media streaming devices, easily unblocking every major streaming platform we tested.
Many VPN services are simply unable to bypass geo-restrictions on streaming services, as content platforms get better at identifying and blocking VPN connections.
Only top-rated VPNs can unblock geo-restricted content on Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Max, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and many more platforms. They maintain a vast pool of IP addresses that allow access to video content that’s unavailable in your country or region.

Top Streaming VPNs Compared
The table below compares our highest-rated streaming VPNs based on download speed, access to streaming services, Smart DNS availability, and more.
The VPNs we recommend have apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Fire TV. Other than PrivateVPN, they also include a Smart DNS service to unblock streaming services on Apple TV, PlayStation, and Xbox.
ExpressVPN is the best VPN for streaming overall. Our tests show that it’s capable of accessing 104 international streaming sites, including major platforms like Netflix, Max, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, DAZN, and Hulu.
It also works with 18 international Netflix libraries and has the widest device compatibility of any VPN, with custom apps for Fire TV Stick, Android TV, Apple TV, and more.
ExpressVPN works with 100s of international streaming services.
Accesses 104 International Streaming Services
Since we’ve been using ExpressVPN, we’ve tested it on 120 streaming services from all over the world. Our data shows that it’s able to unblock the most streaming sites out of any VPN.
Here’s a list of some popular global streaming sites that ExpressVPN works with:
ExpressVPN is the best VPN for Netflix. It unblocks 18 different libraries, including content available only in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, the US, and the UK.
The only VPN that is better than ExpressVPN for Netflix regions is Windscribe, which unblocks an industry-leading 32 libraries.
Although it doesn’t have specific servers for streaming, our tests have found that almost every ExpressVPN server works with Netflix and other streaming platforms. This makes using ExpressVPN to watch streaming content much simpler than other VPNs.
Fast International Speeds for High Resolution Streaming
ExpressVPN is very fast on both local and international connections. We measured an average global download speed of 85Mbps, which is ideal for buffer-free streaming. Using ExpressVPN, you’ll be able to watch all your favorite TV shows in HD or even 4K from anywhere.
ExpressVPN has the widest device compatibility of any VPN. You can install its bespoke apps on numerous streaming devices, including Apple TV and Fire TV Stick. It also comes with an intuitive app for Google TV and a dedicated app for routers.
If you want to stream on your desktop or mobile, you can use ExpressVPN’s apps for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.
It also has a Smart DNS feature called MediaStreamer. This spoofs your location and unblocks content on devices that aren’t compatible with VPNs, including games consoles.
NordVPN is slightly behind ExpressVPN when it comes to streaming. It unblocks fewer streaming services overall and fewer Netflix libraries, but it’s still excellent for streaming geo-restricted content and outperforms ExpressVPN when it comes to UK streaming specifically.
The VPN’s impressive speeds allows for Full HD and 4K streaming without buffering. We measured a speed loss of just 10% connecting to the UK from New York.
We unblocked streaming sites from all over the world with NordVPN.
Unblocks 102 Global Streaming Services
As with ExpressVPN, NordVPN unblocks almost all of the 120 streaming service we tested. Here is a list of some of the most popular sites it unblocks:

NordVPN is particularly impressive for UK streaming. It comes with 629 UK servers and is our top pick for BBC iPlayer and reliably unblocks Channel 4 and ITVX. Only a few VPNs can get around BBC geo-blocks and NordVPN has been the best at doing it for a while.
However, it disappoints if you want to use a VPN to watch Korean shows. NordVPN fails to unblock both Kakao TV and Wavve. It’s also unable to access Hotstar from outside of India.
NordVPN has fully-featured apps for Fire TV Stick, Android TV, and Apple TV, making streaming on your Smart TV much easier.
It’s also got excellent apps for deskptop and mobile apps if streaming on portable devices is your preference.
Additionally NordVPN offers a Smart DNS that works to access geo-restricted services without the need of a VPN. This also enables you to stream content on games consoles.
PrivateVPN is a cheap VPN that makes streaming simple. It labels the servers that work best with specific streaming services, and it successfully unblocks Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Max, and more.
At least one PrivateVPN server could stream US Netflix in our tests.
Impressive International Streaming Performance
Based on our comprehensive tests, PrivateVPN unblocks 84 streaming sites from across the world.
This is less than ExpressVPN and NordVPN but it’s still a very impressive result. Here’s a list of some of the most popular sites that PrivateVPN does and does not access:

SBS On Demand (Australia)

It’s unfortunate that PrivateVPN fails to access Hotstar and YouTube TV. It also disappoints when it comes to German streaming in particular, as PrivateVPN doesn’t work with Joyn, RTL+, or the German DAZN.
Works with 10 Netflix Libraries
PrivateVPN provides unrestricted access to 10 international Netflix catalogues with just one subscription. This includes popular libraries from the US, UK, and Canada.
Only Hide.me. NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Windscribe access more libraries than PrivateVPN.
Budget Price Has Some Downsides
Although PrivateVPN performs slightly worse than ExpressVPN and NordVPN for scale of access to blocked sites and Netflix libraires, it remains a substantially cheaper option.
On its best price deal, PrivateVPN only costs $2.00 per month. You can also use PrivateVPN for free by using its 30-day money-back guarantee.
As a result of its discount price, we’ve found that PrivateVPN is not as innovative as its rivals. It’s slower to update and it has still not developed an Apple TV app or a Smart DNS. This effects its overall streaming performance.
Smaller Server Network & Slower Speeds Than Competitors
PrivateVPN has a relatively small server network, with servers in 62 countries. This means that, compared to ExpressVPN and NordVPN, many global streaming sites will not be available.
In terms of speed, our tests show that using PrivateVPN to connect to almost anywhere in the globe will deliver speeds up to 82Mbps, which is an 18% speed loss.
This is a greater speed loss than ExpressVPN and NordVPN, but 4K streaming requires around 25Mbps, meaning PrivateVPN is more than fast enough for maximum resolution streaming, even if you’re connecting from thousands of miles away.
Surfshark is one of the best streaming VPNs as it is excellent at unblocking Netflix and it can access 96 other streaming services from across the globe.
It’s our standout pick for streaming sports. It’s the only VPN that has a GPS spoofer, which means it can bypass more sophisticated geo-restrictions on services like MLB.TV and ESPN+. In our tests, it also worked to access sites like DAZN, JioCinema, NFL+, and Kayo Sports.
Surfshark’s GPS Override makes it the best VPN for streaming content on Android.
Best VPN for Streaming Sports
Surfshark is our top pick if you want to stream sports from across the globe, including football, cricket, racing, and more. After testing it with multiple sports sites, we’ve compiled a list of sports streaming sites that Surfshark can unblock and which sports are available:

Baseball, Boxing, Golf, Soccer & More

While other VPNs on this list can also stream these sites, Surfshark stands out because it has a GPS spoofer on Android . This means Surfshark is able to get around tough geo-blocks that use geo-location technology, including MLB.TV, ESPN+, and Hulu Live TV.

You can watch 9 different Netflix libraries through Surfshark’s VPN servers, including content from Brazil, Canada, France, India, Italy, Mexico, Singapore, the US and the UK’s Netflix libraries.
While Surfshark has no dedicated streaming servers, almost all its US servers will work for Netflix. In our most recent tests, only the St.Louis and Charlotte servers didn’t work.
You can watch Disney+ through every single Surfshark server. For this reason, we also recommend it as the best VPN for Disney+.
While access to BBC iPlayer has been inconsistent, you can watch it using Surfshark’s browser extensions. Surfshark is also our budget choice to watch Max from overseas.
Smart TV Apps & Smart DNS
We found Surfshark to have the best app for Android TV and excellent dedicated apps for all other streaming devices, including Fire TV, Apple TV, and desktop and mobile devices.
It also has a Smart DNS that you can setup to access geo-blocked content without a VPN connection. However, this is limited to US content only.
If you need help to set up or use the apps to stream your favorite shows the Surfshark customer support team is also on hand 24/7 via live chat.
Fast & Good Value for Money
Surfshark’s speeds are competing with the fastest VPNs, able to reach an average global connection of 83Mbps. This means streaming from any global streaming service can be done in high resolution and without any lag.
With access to 98 global streaming sites, Surfshark is excellent value for money. It costs just $2.29 per month on a two-year subscription, which is cheaper than ExpressVPN and NordVPN.
CyberGhost offers over 100 dedicated streaming servers and it works with 77 international streaming sites. It also works with 10 major Netflix libraries, including the US, and popular services like BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Max, and YouTube TV.
CyberGhost unblocks fewer overall streaming services and its speeds are behind other VPNs, but it makes our list for streaming because you can try CyberGhost for free for 24 hours on Windows and macOS with no strings attached. There is also a 7-day trial available on iOS and a 3-day trial on Android.
We accessed the US Max library using CyberGhost.

In total, CyberGhost unblocks 77 streaming services from across the world. This is impressive, but it is the lowest number on this list, and it’s disappointing to see that CyberGhost doesn’t unblock DAZN, Kayo Sports, Jio Cinema, and RTVE Play.
Optimized Streaming Servers & Simple Apps
CyberGhost has servers in 100 countries and it makes streaming simple by highlighting the server locations that unblock specific platforms.
CyberGhost’s native VPN apps are easy to use and well-designed, especially its Fire TV Stick software.
The VPN service also offers a Smart DNS that is compatible with multiple international regions, including Japan, Germany, the US, the Netherlands, and the UK. Most Smart DNS solutions are restricted to US streaming only.
However, it’s a problem that CyberGhost still hasn’t developed an Apple TV app like most leading VPNs.
Free Trial & Extended Money-Back Guarantee
Although CyberGhost’s overall streaming performance is less impressive than other VPNs, we recommend it as it’s the best option for those who want a free trial for streaming.
CyberGhost has multiple free trial offers. On top of that, you can take advantage of its 45-day money-back guarantee, which is the longest refund guarantee of any VPN. This essentially means you get access to lots more streaming content completely free.
Free VPNs usually don’t work with streaming services. In addition, they often come with restrictive data and speed caps. However, there is one VPN that stands out.
PrivadoVPN is the best free VPN for streaming. It unblocks 29 streaming services from over the world, including 2 Netflix libraries and several other services like Max, Tubi, Hulu, and Prime Video. This outperforms all other free VPNs we’ve tested.
It also comes with easy-to-use dedicated apps for streaming devices like Fire TV Stick and Android TV. However, PrivadoVPN limiits its free server network to only 11 countries and its data allowance to 10GB, which is highly restrictive.
PrivadoVPN’s Android TV app is better designed than other free VPNs, like Windscribe & Hide.me.
Unblocks 29 Streaming Services
PrivadoVPN Free restricts its server network to 11 countries, meaning lots of popular international streaming sites are completely unavailable.
Here is a glimpse of how PrivadoVPN Free performed in our streaming tests:

Where PrivadoVPN has servers its streaming performance is impressive. It unblocks many of the most popular streaming services in the world, including Max, Hulu, and US Netflix.
US & UK Netflix & Fast Speeds
PrivadoVPN Free only unblocks 2 Netflix libraries, but this is actually one of the best results of any free VPN. Only Windscribe Free unblocks more, but PrivadoVPN is arguably more useful as its the only free service that can access the US library.
PrivadoVPN Free’s speeds are very fast for a free service, with average international speeds of 84Mbps. This matches our actual experience of using PrivadoVPN, because we rarely encountered buffering.
Apps for Fire TV Stick & Android TV
PrivadoVPN has the best free VPN app for Android TV. It works with US Netflix and other streaming services and comes with the ability to add shortcuts to your favorite streaming apps.
Similiarly, it’s Fire TV Stick does a good job of accessing streaming services on your TV. It used to function poorly, but PrivadoVPN has now resolved all issues.
The downside is the absence of an Apple TV app, which most leading VPNs now offer, as well as Smart DNS, which PrivadoVPN has decided not to offer.
Using NordVPN, you’ll be able to watch UK TV in HD without buffering or slow loading times.
Disney+
Winner: Surfshark
Surfshark bypasses Disney+ blocks every time.
Using a VPN with Disney+ gives you access to movies from Marvel, Pixar, Disney, and more.
Most countries have access to Disney+, but if you’re in the US you can connect to a European server and stream Disney+ Star.
Likewise, users outside the US can access the Disney+ bundle package that includes Hulu and ESPN (with an additional fee).
The best VPN for Disney+ is Surfshark. That’s because it works to stream all Disney+ content on absolutely any server.
You’ll need a payment method registered in one of the countries Disney+ has launched. If you don’t have this, follow the workarounds in our Disney+ VPN guide.
Hotstar
Winner: ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN’s virtual India server locations worked to access Hotstar outside of India.
Disney+ Hotstar has video content that is split between Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+ and HBO Max in the US. It also has a free version that allows you to stream Bollywood favorites and TV shows, like Koffee with Karan.
ExpressVPN is our favorite VPN for Hotstar. It runs India virtual servers that deliver fast connections speeds into India from abroad.
Amazon Prime Video
Winner: ExpressVPN
We used ExpressVPN to unblock ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ on US Prime Video from the UK.
Amazon Prime Video has an international content library of over 20,000 movies and TV shows.
With a VPN, you can unblock Prime Video’s geo-restricted content and stream content from other regions. However, you’ll need to connect to a US server and register a new account.
Based on our tests, ExpressVPN is the best choice for Amazon Prime Video. To find out out why — and exactly how to use it — read our instructions for using a VPN with Amazon Prime Video.
Hulu
Winner: ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN worked very well with Hulu in our tests.
Hulu is another difficult streaming service to unblock. All of Hulu’s movies and TV shows are strictly blocked for anyone from outside of the US.
To identify the best VPN for Hulu, we tested a number of randomized US servers from all our top-rated streaming VPNs.
We found that ExpressVPN is the best VPN for Hulu. Once connected, it gave us access to shows like Fargo, The Simpsons, and The Handmaid’s Tale, all in HD.
Max
Winner: ExpressVPN
We unblocked shows like ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ on Max via ExpressVPN’s US servers.
HBO Max is the premium streaming service of HBO. To watch it, you’ll need an American (or Scandinavian) IP address.
Using a VPN with HBO Max gives you access to all the TV shows and movies from HBO, as well as the full WarnerMedia library.
ExpressVPN is the best VPN for HBO Max. It reliably streams HBO Max from other countries, so you can watch Max Originals like Wonder Woman 1984, Friends, and Game of Thrones from outside the US.
Which VPNs to Avoid for Streaming
Most free VPNs aren’t good choices for streaming due to data, server, or speed restrictions. Even lots of paid VPNs don’t make a dedicated effort to get streaming geo-restrictions due to the cost and labor required.
Good VPNs for streaming offer dedicated servers, fast international speeds, apps for as many devices as possible, and a Smart DNS. These features cost a lot to maintain though, which means many popular VPN services simply don’t make the cut.
Popular VPNs that do not work well for streaming generally include:
AirVPN
Avira Phantom
HideMyAss
Mullvad
Perfect Privacy
TorGuard
Trust.Zone
TunnelBear
There are hundreds of other VPNs available that aren’t ideal for streaming. If you’d like a reliable service, we recommend choosing one of the five VPNs mentioned in this article.
How to Use a VPN for Streaming
Before you can watch geo-restricted streaming content, you’ll need to set up your VPN software.
If your chosen VPN service comes with custom apps then the installation process is very simple.
We created the video below to showcase how easy it is to unblock a streaming library in a foreign country with a VPN.
Below are simple step-by-step instructions on how to bypass streaming geo-restrictions using a VPN:
How to unblock geo-blocked videos with a VPN:
Subscribe to a VPN service.
Download the VPN software and follow the installation prompts.
Once installed, log into the app using your subscription credentials.
Select a VPN server in the country you’d like to connect to.
Navigate to the streaming service you’d like to access and log in as normal.
You’ll now have access to all of the movies and TV shows available in that country.
Streaming VPN Not Working?
Most streaming services try to prevent users from accessing their content with a VPN.
They do this by blocking IP addresses associated with VPN servers. This happens when a large number of users try to access the service using the same IP address. You’ll know when your VPN IP address has been blocked because you’ll see a proxy error message:
Netflix’s ‘Pardon the interruption’ streaming error message.
These bans come in waves, and are often impossible to predict. However, a good streaming VPN will work hard to get around these blocks.
If your streaming VPN isn’t working, try these troubleshooting tips to fix it:
Use our VPN leak test to see if your VPN is leaking your IP address or DNS requests. If it is, get in touch with the customer support to resolve the issue or change VPN services.
Clear your cache and cookies, flush your DNS cache, and then relaunch the streaming service.
Connect to a different VPN server and repeat solution #2. If there are no dedicated streaming servers, you should contact your VPN provider’s customer support team to find out which VPN servers are currently working with your chosen streaming service.
Access the streaming service using a different browser. For example, sometimes you can access a certain service through Mozilla Firefox even if it’s not working on Google Chrome.
Disable GPS and location services on your computer, smartphone, or browser.
Disable IPv6 at the device-level.
If all these solutions fail, try a different VPN service.
Specifically for Netflix, there are additional workarounds to try if your Netflix VPN isn’t working.

FAQ
Is It Illegal to Use a VPN for Streaming?
In the US, UK, and most European countries it is completely legal to use a VPN to access different international content libraries. In other words, there is no risk that streaming with a VPN will result in legal penalties.
Many users are worried that bypassing geo-restrictions is somehow similar to piracy. Piracy is illegal because it allows people to access copyrighted material they have not paid for. When you use a VPN for streaming, you still pay for the platform you’re accessing.
Simply put, using a streaming VPN doesn’t allow you to access content for free, it simply allows you to circumvent licensing restrictions.
While using a VPN for streaming isn’t illegal, some streaming platforms do state that accessing geo-blocked content is against their terms of service.
Is Streaming Faster with a VPN?
In most cases, using a VPN will not increase your streaming speeds. In fact, VPNs marginally slow down your internet speeds as your traffic has to travel further before it reaches its destination.
In this case, installing a VPN can conceal the websites you’re accessing from your ISP and allow you to stream at normal speeds.
What is Smart DNS?
SmartDNS is a technology that reroutes your DNS (Domain Name Server) requests to servers in a different country.
Smart DNS alone does not encrypt your browsing data or mask your public IP address. However, it does allow you to access websites and services that aren’t available in your country.
That’s because the websites you visit will see your DNS requests have originated from a different country.
Smart DNS is often used to bypass geographic restrictions on devices that do not support native VPN applications. Once you’ve signed up to a VPN that support Smart DNS, you simply update the DNS settings of your device with the DNS details your chosen VPN server.
If you’re looking to configure Smart DNS on a particular device, take a look at our VPN Setup guides.
Smart DNS is by far the easiest way to watch restricted content on games consoles and Smart TVs. However, many VPN services simply don’t offer Smart DNS functionality.
If you’re looking for the best VPN with Smart DNS, we recommend using ExpressVPN, Surfshark or CyberGhost. They all come with a Smart DNS feature and unlock the most popular streaming services.
However, if you’re looking to watch streaming content on desktop or mobile, we strongly recommend using a full VPN over any Smart DNS feature.
Not only are VPNs more reliable than Smart DNS, they also encrypt your internet traffic and hide your IP address – protecting your privacy in the process.
A VPN will also allow you to access content from more regions than Smart DNS, which typically only supports US and UK streaming libraries.
